The United States of America, with support from the United Kingdom, Australia and the Northern Alliance, attacked Afghanistan in October 2001 to punish, catch, or kill the al-Qaida members accused of being responsible for the attacks of September 11, 2001 as well as the Taliban who gave them hospitality in their country. It was also described as part of its 'War on Terrorism' campaign. US general Tommy Franks led the military campaign. As there was no formal declaration of war between the USA and Afghanistan, there are no official dates when the war started and when it finished. However, for convenience, we will assume that the war started the first day the American and British planes started bombing Afghanistan, that is October 7, 2001, and that it finished when Hamid Karzai was elected president in June 2002. In this document the post war will be assumed to have started on July 1, 2002.
